Description

Pentids® manufacturer is Abbott.

Pentids® tablets contain active ingredient is Penicillin G Potassium (Benzylpenicillin) – an antibiotic belonging to the drug class called beta-lactamase sensitive penicillins (the least toxic drugs known).

Indications:

- bacterial infections of the wound, blood (septicemia and pyemia), bone (osteomyelitis), pus filled (pyogenic) skin or soft tissue, nose, throat, respiratory tract, and middle ear;

- inflammations: of brain (meningitis), of the inner layer of the heart (endocarditis), of joint (arthritis);

- gas gangrene, joint pain caused by parasite ticks (Lyme disease), diphtheria, tetanus;

- infection from animals (anthrax and leptospirosis), rat-bite fever, actinomycosis;

- listeriosis (infection of CNS caused by listeria), pasteurellosis;

- sexually transmitted infections (STDs) like gonorrhea and syphilis.

Pentids® can also be used for prevention of infection in newborn babies (specifically group B streptococcal infection).

MOA (mechanism of action):

Penicillin G works by interfering with the cell wall synthesis, resulting in cell wall exposure. This causes bacteria death. Penicillins are only bactericidal and do not work against viral infections. Penicillin G is mainly effective against Gram-negative organisms such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidi.

Dosage

For adults and teenagers:

The recommended dose is 200,000 to 500,000 Units (125 to 312 mg) every 4 to 6 hours.

For infants and children (under 12 years):

The recommended dose is 4167 to 30,000 Units per kg (189 to 13,636 Units per pound) of body weight every 4 to 8 hours.

Do not drink acidic fruit juices (orange or grapefruit juice) or other acidic beverages within 1 hour of taking Pentids® since this may interfere with the medication’s effectiveness.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Pentids® to compensate the missed dose.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Contraindications

Do not take Pentids® if you are allergic to the Penicillin G or to other Penicillins.

Do not take Pentids® if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients comprised in Pentids®.

Do not take Pentids® if you are taking a Tetracycline antibiotic (e.g., Tetracin®).

Do not take Pentids®if you have a history of severe allergic reactions associated with using antibiotics.

Do not take Pentids® if you have a kidney, liver or heart conditions.

Do not take Pentids® if you experience an overgrowth of yeast (candida) in the body which can lead to fungal infections or severe diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis).

Consult your doctor before taking Pentids® if you take other medications like Chloramphenicol, guar gum; Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin), heparin, or methotrexate; aminoglycosides (e.g., Gentamicin); oral contraceptives (birth control pills), or oral Typhoid vaccine.

Do not take Pentids® if you are pregnant, plan to have a baby, or are breastfeeding.
